What to Expect from Your Family Law Initial Consultation

Whenever you are experiencing a family law issue, you will likely wish to hire a San Diego divorce attorney. You will not be short of options, so how do you choose which one is right for you? You will want to make sure you make the correct choice, knowing how much of your future you’re going to be entrusting to them.

Your initial consultation is possibly the most important meeting of your entire case. During your consultation, you will have the undivided attention of your attorney to give them as many details about your case as possible. This serves two purposes: it allows your lawyer to analyze your case and provide you with the best possible individually-tailored advice, and it helps both of you determine if you wish to work together.

The latter point is extremely important. If you feel as though the attorney you are meeting with may not have your best interests at heart or you don’t necessarily feel comfortable with them in any way, you should choose to move on and pursue other options.

Likewise, if your attorney feels as though you have unrealistic goals for your case and refuse to budge away from them, they may choose to decline your case. This means there are two important things you should bring to your consultation: a set of goals, and an open mind. Your attorney’s job is to mold those goals in to optimistic, but achievable expectations for your case, which requires you to be open-minded and flexible. If something regarding your case is important to you, be sure to make it known, and your attorney should listen, but likewise their job is to provide you with a realistic picture for your case.

A consultation usually lasts roughly an hour, and can take place either over the phone or in-person, whichever is most convenient for you. While it is important that you come prepared with a list of questions regarding your case, most attorneys will also provide you with the ability to call and ask any further questions that may arise. When you feel completely comfortable with a particular lawyer, then you should absolutely hire them and give them the opportunity to represent you in your case.
